Phishing Crisis at Fresno State
Many students, faculty, and staff at Fresno State have been receiving scam emails ranging from almost $500 a week for paid internships, free pianos, and even accounts being disabled unless immediate actions are taken. Information Technology Services takes the lead in making sure everyone stays up to date when getting these emails.
Bao Johri, vice president for innformation technology and chief information officer at Fresno State says the technology services department is doing all it can to help students avoid getting caught in a scam.
“We are always on the lookout for our students to ensure that data is being protected. So, right now, if you are looking at your email and so forth, there is a warning banner on emails that we believe that may be suspicious,” said Johri.
Franciso Cardinale, ASI Senator of Academic Affairs, has helpful tips ASI uses to help spot phishing emails.
“You can actually see a really good guide on kind of how to protect yourself from phishing emails, as well as how to report them, and then I believe there’s even a little quiz that you can do to see if you can identify phishing emails,” said Cardinale.
Elsa Mexicano, a kinesiology major, is satisfied with how technology services is responding to phishing emails.
“I think they’re in a pretty good place right now. I mean, they catch it right away. They send like an email like that. It was that is a scam, like within minutes, so I think they’re doing the best they can,” said Mexicano.
