The Fresno State Learning Center offers individualized learning support
FRESNO, Calif. – As the semester progresses, some students are discovering their groove while realizing they may need additional support. Tucked away in the basement of the Fresno State Library, students will find a valuable resource: the Learning Center.

Ariana Sanz, a front desk assistant at the Learning Center, said there are a number of helpful resources available to students.
“Starting with tutoring, where we offer support for over six hundred courses, which is very awesome,” Sanz said.
In addition to tutoring, the Learning Center offers supplemental instruction, specifically designed for classes with higher failure rates. Sanz said this program employs diverse teaching methods to enhance student comprehension and retention, often resulting in significant grade improvements. Some students have reported raising their grades by an entire letter after using the resource.
Students can also engage one-on-one with a coach through the center’s academic success coaching services. Tutors said this personalized approach not only helps students navigate their academic challenges but also connects them with a variety of campus resources tailored to their specific needs
While working the font desk, Sanz has noticed some students visiting the center regularly.
”It goes to show that students really do appreciate the help and they feel comfortable here, which is what we strive to provide for our students,” Sanz said. “A place where they feel comfortable to come seek help, whether it’s with their assignments, campus resources for just having a community where they feel comfortable studying and asking questions.”

Avery Ramirez, a chemistry tutor at the Learning Center, said the one-on-one coaching sessions are catered to each student’s individual learning needs.
”Usually starts off by me just asking ‘what do you need?’ ‘What is you’re best process of learning?’ ‘Like do you do best with example questions or just explanations?’ So, it’s catered to you whatever you need to be tutored,” Ramirez said.
Ramirez said the Learning Center tutors want to see students succeed.

Lynee Sims, a math tutor, believes individual learning plans make a big difference in learning outcomes.
”That’s one of the pillars of our job actually,” Sims said. “Whenever our students come in, we try to remember their first name, their professors, whatever class they are taking. So then the next time they come in, we’re back where we were before.
The tutors at the learning center believe no student is the same and no session is the same. The learning center has people and programs to make sure every student succeeds.
Students can schedule appointments with the Learning Center online, where they can select tutoring services and choose a tutor based on their class and availability.
The Learning Center is hosting an open house event to unveil its newly remodeled space on March 13 from 11 am to 1 pm. There will be free food, raffles and more.
