Exploring the importance of local business in the valley
SANGER, Calif. – Recent studies suggest that around 35% of all businesses in the Central Valley are locally owned and operated.
Local businesses make up the majority of businesses in the dozens of small towns found throughout the San Joaquin Valley.
This distinguishes the valley from other regions in California, which are dominated by big retailers and companies.
“Local businesses are kind of separate from southern California and Northern California,” said Philip Foster, local business owner and advisor, “the more business that’s done here recirculates throughout the valley.”
The Central Valley has seen a lower cost of living over the past few years. This has attracted people from all over the country. Within the last two years, the median household income of Sanger grew 16%.
This growth has been shown through the many new locally owned businesses that have popped up throughout the town.
“I love to see the valley build itself up and reinvest in its future, as all the people coming in are helping our economy diversify and flourish,” Foster said.
Local business owner Kross Savas recently opened a new floral shop in the town’s downtown. The shop, L’Amore di Cardinale, opened its doors back in January, adding a new amenity to the city.
“I think it adds some character and some personal appeal to anyone who is looking to do something new in the area,” Kross said. “It’s stores like mine that make Sanger’s charm shine.”
