Fresno State group fitness builds community
The Fresno State Recreation Center is a fitness resource available to students free of cost. It also offers group fitness classes such as bootcamp, yoga and zumba.
But, at 6:30 a.m. in the aerobic studio rows of bikes line the back of the class, pedals are pushed and wheels spin for cycle class.
Guadalupe Fernandez, a junior forensic behavioral science major, has been attending group fitness classes since her freshman year.
“I really like how everybody really motivates you to work out they’re like ‘Oh are you gonna come to class, are you gonna come to class?’ and then it really makes me want to come work out,” Fernandez said.

Kendall Waugh, a deaf education major, will be graduating in May but shared what her favorite part of teaching cycle was.
“Just the people. I mean I’ve made so many different friends and just the people that come to class every week, I’ve built relationships with all of them. The love that everyone brings and just the enjoyment. Everyone’s excited to be there that’s what I love the most about it,” Waugh said.
The Fresno State Recreation Center is looking for group fitness instructors for the next semester. Those interested in teaching can email Lerin Winchester at lwinchester@mail.fresnostate.edu.
The group fitness class schedule is available on their website.
