Fresno State Esports club paves a path for students to level up their hobby
The Fresno State Esports club is home to dozens of student gamers who compete at the highest level.
Some games played in the club include Rocket League, Valorant, League of Legends, and Marvel Rivals.
While many might believe that esports requires a high amount of technical skill, members have said that communication is key.
“What really matters is communication and being able to coordinate with your team members,” said Ryland Bailey, the president of the Marvel Rivals team. “If you’re able to do that and have experience in that area, going forward in future practice environments, you’re basically able to play at a tournament level, but you may not necessarily be at that rank.”
Most members try to put in a few hours every day, with some logging over 30 hours in a month.
This is on top of schoolwork that can be demanding. But there’s a trick to this balance.
“Don’t procrastinate,” said club member Deken Jones. “No, that’s really been my secret, though. I will literally just do my assignments in class or right after, and it’s helped me stay on top of it. And it’s been so nice because I have more time to practice or do whatever else I want.”
The club gamers are required to have a GPA of 2.5 or higher to stay in the club and have access to the gaming room, which is located inside Bulldog Lanes.
The club livestreams around four times a week, usually in the evening.

Monday is when the Valornat team plays, Tuesday is for Marvel Rivals, Wednesday is for Rocket League and Thursday is for League of Legends.
Viewers can tune in on Twitch and watch these student gamers tee off against other collegiate esports teams.
