Fit Without Fear: Finding Strength in a Supportive Space

FRESNO – Staying active and moving is one of the most important things to prolong a healthy life.

Brenda Perez, an all-women’s gym employee, has witnessed how a supportive, social atmosphere can make a lasting impact on women’s self-esteem.

“I think it’s the social aspect to for women, you know that they have camaraderie, they have a lot of things in common than being next to a you know a young man at a gym. So I really think the all-women concept is productive.”

The gym can be intimidating for everyone, and feeling comfortable is a big factor for women who want to maintain a healthy lifestyle, as 65% of women avoid the gym out of fear of being judged.

“I’ve heard a lot of ladies say that they feel more comfortable because they’re intimidated by men being around and working out,” said Veronica, an all-women’s gym employee.

One female gym attendee enjoys the comfort of a less intimidating environment.

Staying active and healthy while being comfortable is a big aspect for 80-year-old Carol Jones.

“I enjoy being able to work out without worrying about anything or anybody saying anything.”

For many women, finding a place that feels safe and supportive is what turns a hard first step into a lasting healthy habit, and is a reminder that sometimes, the right environment can make all the difference.
