Fresno State men’s golf posts season-best finish

The Fresno State men’s golf team closed out their home tournament, the Watney Invitational, with a season-best fourth place finish.

Seniors Jaden Hunter and Jake Bettencourt led the way. Both Bulldogs finished with a season-best tie for seventh place in their final home tournament of their collegiate careers.

While the ‘Dogs weren’t able to reclaim their home title, the team is looking build off the fourth place finish with just a few tournaments remaining.

“We haven’t had the year we wanted to,” Bettencourt said. “Getting at home and getting a good finish, a solid finish as a team is gonna do a lot for us the rest of the way.”

For Bettencourt, this was his last time teeing it up in the Bulldogs’ annual home tournament. With three tournaments until the Mountain West Championship, Bettencourt took the time to reflect on his career at Fresno State.

“It’s tough because, I mean, for me, I’ve had some injuries in my years so it’s gone by slow and fast at the same time,” Bettencourt said.

Bettencourt was able to put together a season-low round of 2-under in the final round of the tournament, jolting himself inside the top 10 of the leaderboard.

“To me, that was a huge highlight,” said Head Coach Chad Spencer. “He led the team today.”

As the Bulldogs head into the final stretch of the season, the team has reflected on how close they have become overtime.

“Yeah it’s an individual sport but we all do stuff together that we all became really close friends and we’ll be close friends for life,” Bettencourt said.

The team will head to the R.E. Lamkin in San Diego on March 9-10.

The Bulldogs will have just two more tournaments until the Mountain West Championship, marking the final collegiate tournament for Bettencourt and Hunter.
