Specialized learning at center stage: The Sanger Community Day School Story

SANGER, Calif. Sanger Community Day School, located next to the Sanger Youth Center, is a specialized learning school part of Sanger Unified School District that focuses on providing individualized support for students who exhibit poor decision making or general academic struggles shown at their previous schools.

The school, led by principal Alfredo Ponce, teaches the same exact curriculum that any SUSD K-12 school offers it’s students.

“We are a school like any other school. Everything that our students are getting is grade level curriculum, so whatever students are getting at Sanger High School or Sanger West High School or any high school in the state of California, our students receive the same curriculum.” Said Ponce.

Subjects taught at the school include math, reading, writing and science. The school has students that are in grades 7-11.

“Technically, we consider ourselves two schools, with a middle school and a high school that carries seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th grade students.” Ponce Said.

Aside from supporting their journeys in academic success, Sanger Community Day School also offers students five electives to choose from, including Clothing design, construction, 3D printing, cooking and video production.

“We’re very proud of our elective programs. We do guarantee that every one of our students gets an elective.” School principal Alfredo Ponce Said.

With every resource this school offers for students, how do students feel the resources are helping them individually? Student Jordan Martin says Sanger Community Day School has helped him become more “grown” at times.

“I look at things way different than I used to. I’m more grown about certain situations now, and I just feel like this school overall will help everybody grow as an individual.” Martin said.

Perhaps the elective that is most impactful for students, is the video production class, which offers “Maverick Television”. A YouTube channel meant to serve the community in the way of live streaming local events.

“We have a show called Maverick Television on YouTube, and we usually take anywhere from 5 to 10 students a night who provide the service of being able to bring [Local high school sports] games to families that potentially cannot make it. And it’s really nice because they get to provide the service for families worldwide not just in the local area.” Ponce explained.
